Now to reel in cash for fishing scheme \\\\\\
Sep 10 2001
icteesside report.
A town council is hoping it can net funding to make fishing a sport for all.
Thornaby Town Council wants to build fishing facilities for the disabled on the Tees.
The scheme will make it easier for wheelchair-bound people who enjoy fishing, or would like to take up the pastime, by providing better access to the river at Thornaby.
But first organisers must raise an estimated ..£90,000, and a bid for Lottery funding has already been made.
A joint partnership of Stockton Borough Council, Thornaby Town Council and Thornaby Regeneration Partnership is also expected to supplement the fund.
Thornaby Mayor Derek Brown, said the town council applied to Stockton's environment committee for support last year.
"We found out through talking to various bodies that there was a cry for this type of thing, both locally and nationally.
"The area we've chosen is flat and serviceable and there are no problems of bank erosion, as at other parts of the river."
He said the new facilities would help disabled people become more involved in fishing.
Under the plans, a minor access route will be built leading from Cornfield Road in Thornaby to the river if planning permission is agreed.
A series of fishing stages will be built on the riverbank, using concrete bases with ramps for wheelchairs and aluminium safety frames.
An access road will be built behind the stages for cars and the surrounding areas will be landscaped and tidied to make it a pleasant place for people to fish.
The scheme could be given the go-ahead by October.
